Our Ghana trips have become extremely popular, and as a result, we found ourselves running three particularly successful trips to this must-visit West African country during the past few months. These trips were guided by the Valentine brothers, Glen and Keith, and the highlights included some of Africa’s most sought-after species. These included the White-necked Rockfowl – which was seen on all three tours, the bizarre and striking Egyptian Plover, mega rare and restricted Nimba Flycatcher, and unique Oriole Warbler. Other highlights were the near-mythical Congo Serpent Eagle, Long-tailed Hawk, Black-collared Lovebird, the scarce Brown-necked Parrot, Thick-billed Cuckoo, rare Black Spinetail, beautiful Many-coloured Bushshrike, elusive Forest Penduline Tit, shy Capuchin Babbler, Tessmann’s and Olivacious Flycatcher, Forest Scrub Robin, stunning Preuss’s Weaver, Black-bellied Seedcracker and Togo Paradise Whydah. These forests of Ghana are famous for harbouring a number of West Africa’s endangered Upper Guinea endemics and near endemics and others falling into this category that were sighted on these tours included the scarce Ahanta Francolin, Little Green, Melancholy and Fire-bellied Woodpecker, exquisite Red-cheeked Wattle-eye, Red-billed Helmetshrike, Green-tailed Bristlebill, Sharpe’s Apalis, Kemp’s Longbill, Rufous-winged Illadopsis, Copper-tailed Starling, Finsch’s Rufous Thrush, rare Red-fronted Antpecker and the immaculate Buff-throated Sunbird.
