Our fantastic Cuba tours are timed to coincide with the beginning of the nesting season and are specifically designed for locating almost every single Cuban endemic bird, as well as a good number of other Caribbean endemics. This tour is fast becoming one of Rockjumper’s most popular birding adventures and we are currently running two fixed departures a year. Our journey commences in Havanna, and from there we drive through the country to explore the western province of Pinar del Río, Ciénaga de Zapata (Cuba’s top birding destination), Sierra de Najasa and Cayo Coco. Some of the highlights of the roughly 150 bird species seen on this year’s two tours include Gundlach’s Hawk, Cuban Black Hawk, Plain, White-crowned and Scaly-naped Pigeon, Key West, Grey-fronted and Blue-headed Quail-Dove, Cuban Parakeet, Cuban Amazon, Bare-legged (Cuban Screech) Owl, Cuban Pygmy Owl, the minuscule Bee Hummingbird, Cuban Trogon, Cuban Tody, Cuban Green Woodpecker, Fernandina Flicker, Giant Kingbird, Cuban Vireo, Cuban Crow, Cuban Palm Crow, Zapata Wren, Cuban Gnatcatcher, Cuban Solitaire, Yellow-headed and Oriente Warbler, Cuban and Red-shouldered Blackbird, Zapata Sparrow and Cuban Grassquit. However, the delights of Cuba extend beyond its birds, with people leaving this tour with great memories of friendly people, 50’s era cars and atmosphere and some spectacular scenery. We highly recommend doing this tour before Cuba is opened up further and loses much of its authentic appeal.
