Our Northern Tanzania Bird Photo Tour explores the bird-and wildlife-rich reserves of the northern parts of this exceptionally diverse country. The savanna of East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia) is the richest habitat on Earth for birds (as far as sheer volume/density is concerned) and we will be continually surrounded by the most spectacular and cooperative avian treasures, most of which are outstandingly beautiful and extremely easy to see and photograph. A joy indeed and a bird photographer’s paradise! Not that birds are the only focus of this adventure, since we will find ourselves also marvelling at some of the highest concentrations of mammals to be found anywhere on our planet, and all this amidst spectacular scenery in one of Africa’s wildest, most stable, and least spoilt destinations!

Highlights

  • The Wildebeest Migration and all the associated action in Serengeti National Park
  • Experience the sheer numbers of birds and wildlife and the overall ease of photography and birding in East Africa.
  • This tour has an extremely high ‘feel good factor’ with very comfortable accommodations and lots to see, enjoy and experience.
  • Explore some of the most famous wildlife areas on the planet – Ngorongoro Crater, the Serengeti, and Tarangire National Park

Tour Pace & Walking

UNDEMANDING: This tour is ideal for birders and wildlife enthusiasts of all experience levels. It’s suitable for most mobility levels and offers a relaxed pace, ensuring an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Undemanding. Suitable for all photography / birding / wildlife interest levels and mobility capabilities. • Our Bird Photo Tours are a hybrid between our Classic birding tours and dedicated photographic tours. You don’t have to be a professional photographer or have the biggest lens; this is for everyone with an interest in photography and birding. Whether you’re using a bridge camera or the latest body and prime lens, our aims are the same. • These tours are not aimed at seeing the most species possible on the route, rather taking time to photograph key targets and any other interesting species we may find. Naturally, the overall species list will be lower than a comparable birding focused tour. • Whilst we may use blinds, feeders and hide setups on some of these tours, we will not be spending an entire day nor even several hours fixed in one spot. • These tours are suitable for photographers who prefer opportunistic photography over entire days in a hide. • Our leaders will assist in helping everyone secure good photographic opportunities and advise as much as they can on camera setup. However, they are not professional photographic tour leaders.

Accommodation

Comfortable lodges & tented safari camps

Ease of Birding

Undemanding. Most species provide good visuals in open conditions. Forest edge birding is limited.

Other Attractions

Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti, Maasai

Photographic Opportunities

Excellent throughout. Mostly from the vehicle and in lodge gardens. No dedicated hides.

What our clients say about us

Gregory de Klerk
PC, Tanzania 2018

Greg de Klerk was very friendly and competent. He worked diligently to ensure we all saw the birds. We were always given sufficient time to look closely and for some to take photos. A most enjoyable tour.

Gregory de Klerk
JB, SB & CB, Tanzania 2018

We very much enjoyed our East Africa experience, finding it to be the adventure we dreamed it would be. With Greg de Klerk as our excellent and informative guide and the incredible wildlife, the tour exceeded our expectations. Greg took care of us all throughout the tour and was extremely patient and considerate to make certain that all were able to find the birds we were seeking. We had a group with different levels of birding experience and Greg worked so well with all. Thanks to all who made this wonderful experience happen for us.

André Bernon
EG, Tanzania - Mega Birding Tour 2025

This was a very enjoyable, well organized and well led trip. The toughest part, hiking and camping in the Udzungwa Mountains, was the funnest part.

Paul Varney
RS, Tanzania - Highlights 2025

This was an outstanding tour. Paul Varney is a superb guide -he was super-friendly, made sure all of us could see the birds to the extent possible, and was very well organized. I would travel with him as a guide any time! The selection of sites to visit was perfect - a nice variety of habitats and wildlife. I very much enjoyed the visit to the Olduvai Gorge. At Tarangiri we took an optional night game drive, which was fantastic - there we saw an aardvark, a really rare sighting. I would definitely recommend that this be added to the itinerary. The lodgings were fine - all were clean and well- appointed. The meals on offer were somewhat disappointing, though, as nearly all of them served the same types of food - creamed soups, stews, potatoes & rice. The packed lunches were very good, though. All in all this was an absolutely wonderful trip!

RS, Tanzania - Highlights 2025

Paul was excellent. Great at spotting birds and animals, and worked really hard to get us onto difficult to locate sightings. Would suggest that he remind everyone of birding courtesy (get your sighting, make sure your neighbor could get a good sighting, then take photos, and to be careful not to step in front of others, blocking their view). Paul got the ebird lists out to us in about three days (36 checklists) which took a lot of work on his part. Roger was an excellent driver, spotter, birder and historian. He gave us a lot of information about Tanzania, and especially the great migration, which we got to see. There were a ton of highlights on this trip, but I think seeing an Aardvark has to be near the top of the list.
