Another of our new Relaxed tours takes us to the key endemic birding sites of KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Western Cape. An impressive 750+ bird species occur within the region, reflecting the incredible natural diversity of the area; and this, coupled with a modern infrastructure well suited to the needs of the modern traveller, makes birding here an absolute delight. Our tour winds its way from the high-altitude grasslands around Wakkerstroom, endemic-rich mist-belt forests of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, lofty peaks of the magnificent Drakensberg, and the remarkably beautiful south-western Cape.

Tour Pace & Walking

UNDEMANDING: This tour is ideal for birders and wildlife enthusiasts of all experience levels. It’s suitable for most mobility levels and offers a relaxed pace, ensuring an enjoyable experience for everyone.

Undemanding, perfectly suited for all birding / wildlife interest levels & most mobility capabilities. Drive times can be tiring. our Relaxed series of tours are designed to focus on having an enjoyable holiday with a bird and wildlife focus. Where possible; we have reduced or removed long drives, single night stays and poor/rustic accommodation. We have also sought to reduce or remove difficult hikes, narrow/muddy trails and otherwise oppressive environmental conditions. Early starts and night birding are mostly optional, and we will not spend much time searching for difficult and/or skulking species. These tours are not suitable for hardcore birders and listers, or dedicated photographers.

Undemanding, most species provide good visuals. A small number of scare / tricky species.

Daniel Danckwerts

Daniel Danckwerts was excellent—great hearing and eyesight and was excellent at pointing out exactly where the skulky bird was lurking. He was able to find the group many birds that various members of the group had missed on previous trips to South Africa. And more importantly, he was a store of information about the birds, animals and Kruger. Teamed up with Daniel was our most excellent Kruger driver-guide Dirk who knew where everything was and could find it. We navigated this very complicated trip (flight to Skukuza, travel in south Kruger, flight to Cape Town, testing for covid, boarding the MSC Orchestra and off on our cruise around the Cape of Good Hope only with Daniel’s help and guidance. I am hoping to return to Kruger (for the third time) to bird with Daniel and Dirk on the Kruger Challenge. More than the birds, the trip was fun.

James Wade Lee

I`d like to write some words about our guide, James Wade Lee. I must admit that I haven’t met such a good bird guide in a long time. Despite his young age, Wade is an excellent guide – he knows the calls of all the birds perfectly and can spot them without fail. Many times we all searched through our binoculars in the thick undergrowth for a singing bird, and it was always only Wade who found it – somewhere in the tangle of twigs in the distance. It’s clear he has a fantastic grasp of the terrain. On top of that, he’s polite, friendly, very well-mannered and has good breeding – what more could one ask for? Congratulations on having such a brilliant guide. Please pass on my warmest regards to Wade. With thanks for the wonderful trips.

Daniel Danckwerts
TT - South Africa Rallid Quest 2019

There are not enough superlatives to describe Daniel Danckwerts! He is a superstar of a guide and I am glad I had the opportunity to tour with him, because he will be in great demand when the word gets out how amazing this tour was! Although he is one of your junior guides, he conducts himself with poise and confidence in excess of his years. His passion for birding, culture and history is unsurpassed and his laugh is absolutely infectious.  He knew all the hotspots for the notoriously difficult species on this tour and even when the birds weren't cooperating, he devised innovative means to ensure the group would have the best opportunity to see these very, very elusive birds. We learned a few lessons on this inaugural tour about patience and stamina.... it is certainly not for the faint-hearted because it requires a lot of hard work but the rewards certainly exceeded the effort.  Where else do you have the opportunity to see mythic flufftails and crakes all in one place? I will absolutely travel with Daniel again!

We were very happy to have Heinz Ortmann as our guide. He operated the tour very skilfully in every way and with flexibility when needed to try to get all possible targets. We were also very positively surprised that he had such a great knowledge about mammals, butterflies, reptiles and amphibians beside the birds. This was my 2nd (Relaxed ) tour. As far as I can tell relaxed means staying more than 1 night in most places. It means not too strenuous hikes. Not sure it means shorter days. On this tour the ones that brought us back straight to dinner were mostly by our own choice. The relaxed tours are a great option. Paul is an excellent guide and lovely person. He is a good driver, which is important. He was good at adjusting the order of birding places for the day when necessary. He did a great job accommodating for the medical needs that came up. He maintained his patience and cheerfulness throughout. He had good relationships with the hosts of the various places we stayed. I would certainly go anywhere with him and recommend him to everyone.
