Image of the Month June 2024: Waved Albatross

When compared to other Albatross species, the Waved Albatross stands out amongst the crowd. This species striking morphological features and unique distribution make it truly unmistakeable and very special! While most other species are either concentrated to the south of the Tropic of Capricorn or north of the Tropic of Cancer, the Waved Albatross occurs almost exclusively off the northwest coast of South America and is thus the only species to occur exclusively within tropical latitudes. They also nest primarily on Española Island in the Galápagos archipelago! Interestingly, they forage mostly at night due to the nocturnal habits of their squid prey.
This fascinating Albatross species is accompanied by a veritable treasure trove of peculiar species, particularly within the Galapagos Archipelago. Although all species arrived here by wind, water or wings, they have all adapted and flourished within their own interesting, unique ecological niches. One of Earth's most active volcanic areas, and the beautiful volcanic formations, together with the natural history and matchless wildlife from Marine Iguanas, Vegetarian Finches, Flightless Cormorants, to iconic Blue-footed Boobies and a host of weird and wonderful endemics, this will no doubt be any nature enthusiasts dream destination!
Perennially popular among birders for the island endemics and stunning seabirds, nearly all the birds are tame, allowing for outstanding photography. Our special island-hopping tour differs from standard Galápagos cruises, as we aim to see all the possible endemic birds, while reducing our time at sea, with comfortable accommodations on terra firma. Strategic water crossings provide us good chances for the seabird specialties, while allowing access to areas for endemic landbirds too.
