The Broad-billed Tody is a beautiful little bird bursting with character, despite its small stature. With its stunning colouration and confident, energetic nature, it is an endearing species that effortlessly captures and holds your attention. This Tody can be found in the lowlands of Hispaniola, particularly in the open scrub and semi-deserts of the Dominican Republic.
As is the case with other species of Tody, this species nests in holes burrowed in clay embankments. In total, there are five Tody species, all endemic to the Greater Antilles. While similar in appearance, each species showcases slight differences, to suit the character of the islands they inhabit. Hispaniola is the only island with more than one Tody species, with the Broad-billed Tody and Narrow-billed Tody occurring at different elevations, while Jamaica is home to the Jamaican Tody, Puerto Rico hosts the Puerto Rican Tody and Cuba with the Cuban Tody.
All of the Tody species are perfect, tiny representations of the splendid natural beauty that the Caribbean and its diverse islands have to offer. With vivid greens, rich reds, and sparkling blues, both the birds and their lush habitats captivate visitors with their vibrance. The Caribbean islands possess an abundance of birdlife from the Jamaican Owl, Jamaican Mango and Jamaican Becard to Antillean Crested Hummingbird Puerto Rican Lizard Cuckoo, Puerto Rican Screech Owl and Puerto Rican Nightjar.
While the natural beauty of the Caribbean islands is enough to entice many, the warm and friendly cultures add even more charm to the experience. Whether it's exploring the old Spanish colonial-era buildings in Puerto Rico or embracing the laid-back lifestyle that gave birth to reggae music and delicious jerk chicken in Jamaica, there is no shortage of wonderful cultural experiences to enjoy.
For those looking to sink their toes into the sand, kick back, and relax between exciting adventures in search of incredible species like the Broad-billed Tody, this region offers an abundance of pristine beaches where you can bask in the warmth of the Caribbean sun.
