Brazil is one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet and a dream destination for birders, general naturalists, and photographers alike. Our relaxed Southeastern Endemics tour covers some of the key highlights of the threatened Atlantic Forests, seeking out a myriad of remarkable and endemic species.

Ubatuba, Intervales and Itatiaia are among the big name sites that we will explore, with highlight species including Black-fronted Piping Guan, Surucua Trogon, Saffron Toucanet, Red-necked, Golden-chevroned and Green-headed Tanagers, Spot-winged Wood Quail, Spotted Bamboowren, Green-crowned Plovercrest, Festive Coquette, Itatiaia Spinetail, Black-and-gold and Swallow-tailed Cotingas, Bare-throated Bellbird, Hooded Berryeater, Serra do Mar Tyrannulet, as well many other gorgeous tanagers, antbirds, antwrens and huge spectacular antshrikes!

Tour Pace & Walking

Our Relaxed series of tours are designed to focus on having an enjoyable holiday with a bird and wildlife focus. Where possible; we have reduced or removed long drives, single night stays and poor/rustic accommodation. We have also sought to reduce or remove difficult hikes, narrow/muddy trails and otherwise oppressive environmental conditions. Early starts and night birding are mostly optional, and we will not spend much time searching for difficult and/or skulking species. These tours are not suitable for hardcore birders and listers, or dedicated photographers.

Accommodation

Good, one lodge is simple but comfortable.

Ease of Birding

Moderate. A fair amount of forest birding means some species are difficult to find or visuals aren’t always of great quality. Forest edge birding is very rewarding.

Photographic Opportunities

Good to good+. Internal forest photography is challenging, several fruit & hummingbird feeders.

The tour was fantastic and both of our guides were excellent. We enjoyed traveling with Lev. He is so enthusiastic! He is an excellent birding guide and also very knowledgeable about the natural history of the animals we saw. That made the experience even more enjoyable. He worked very hard to enable us to see some of the trickier birds, like the Zigzag Heron that was hiding in the trees. It turns out, he even speaks 'zigzag', as he carried on a 10 min conversation (back and forth calls) with the heron, trying to coax him into a better view. It was wonderful having a local guide, Leo, on this trip as well. He added a lot to the birding experience, was essential for dealing with logistics, and had a wealth of knowledge about the history of Brazil and the places we visited, that made it an even more interesting trip. Well Done Rockjumper!!

This was my second trip with Dusan and like the first trip, he made sure everyone was looked after to the best of his abilities and was always attentive to peoples differing needs. He worked extremely well with our local guide, who himself was attentive to everyone, and they both tried hard to get everyone onto the birds. No complaints to them whatsoever. Rob Williams was knowledgeable about all kinds of animals, and went out of his way to point out lizards he spotted that I would otherwise have missed. I greatly appreciate that. Some of the best moments on the trip for me included sightings of Jaguars, otters, Crab-eating Fox, agoutis, Guinea Pigs, Capybaras and Tegu Lizards. Iguazú Falls was spectacular.

This was a really wonderful trip, so rich in birds, mammals, scenery and food. I really valued the outstanding knowledge all three guides shared with us, their constant awareness of our needs, and their senses of humor.
