The Kingdom of Thailand is an incredibly diverse nation in numerous respects, including its remarkable wildlife, scenery and culture. David Shackelford recently led a tour through this quintessential South East Asian destination, covering the full range of available habitats, from the rhododendron-laden mountains of the far north bordering Burma, to the primary lowland rainforest of central and southern Thailand. Just a few of the star birds seen included Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Siamese Fireback, White-browed Piculet, Red-bearded Bee-eater, Green Peafowl, Silver Pheasant, Green Cochoa, Giant Nuthatch, Oriental Bay Owl and both Gurney’s and Banded Pitta, although it is hard to beat experiences such as the pairs of White-handed Gibbons having a territorial stand-off, with ear-piercing cries and brachiating displays directly above our heads, or watching a male Tickell’s Brown Hornbill regurgitating seeds to feed its mate sealed in a nesting cavity!
