Our Cuba – Caribbean Endemics Birding tours target almost all 28 Cuban endemic birds and further 23 Caribbean specials, as well as great wintering North American migrants. Using the services of local bird specialists at each site, we guarantee an impressive success rate in observing the island’s amazing avian diversity. From the world’s tiniest bird (the Bee Hummingbird) to such sought-after species as Giant Kingbird, the cute Cuban Tody, the beautiful Cuban Trogon, Gundlach’s Hawk, Oriente and Yellow-headed Warbler, Zapata Wren and no less than four species of stunning quail-doves, Cuba is an absolute pleasure to bird. On this tour we will cover a wide variety of habitats, ranging from interior tropical forests and mangroves, to extensive wetlands and white sand beaches along the northern coral cays. The awesome birdlife is further augmented by ease of travel, comfortable lodges, fascinating culture, a turbulent history, vintage cars that take one back to the 50’s and friendly people.

We were surprised to hear that this was Adam Walleyn's first trip to Cuba as well as ours. He obviously prepared very well for the trip and clearly knew his birds. The local guides he used were very familiar with the birds and contributed both to the birding and culture of each region. Alejandro, the cultural guide and facilitator of the trip was both entertaining and knowledgeable and contributed a lot to our understanding of Cuba's past and present. Having a bus driver like Ronaldo who was familiar with birds and birding was a real plus for the tour.
The birding exceeded all expectations. We expected a good number of endemics and a lot of other birds. We saw ALL of the endemics and a pile of other birds. Besides the endemics, there were several life birds for us including painted bunting and American Flamingos. Our guides were simply outstanding. Excellent birders, Tomas and the local guide were also really likable guys, with a lot of flexibility and good humor. Should you decide to make this trip, it is hard to imagine you could do better than these two.
Tuomas was constantly on the birds, even during our long drives. He was infectiously enthusiastic throughout the tour and able to get even the most difficult in our group on the birds. He was also flexible, tweaking the itinerary when the opportunities arose to ensure we got all the target birds. This flexibility is critical to a well-executed tour and does not happen often enough.
Forrest is an incredibly great guide both from the birding and people perspective, just like the other 4 Rockjumper guides I have been with. And Cuba is an amazingly interesting country to visit.
Forrest Rowland is an all-around excellent birding guide. He handled our group of all abilities very well, and as first-time birders on a trip with Rockjumper, we were put at ease immediately by his easy going manner, friendliness and ability to assist us in seeing the birds of Cuba. It was an incredible experience all around to see both cities and rural areas, as well as take the time to learn about the culture as well as the natural history of this island in addition to the birds. Wow! Great adventure!
