Towards the end of 2010, David Shackelford guided an exceedingly successful birding tour to the bio-diverse South American nation of Peru, racking up a phenomenal total of over 900 species in the process! The group also became one of the first to locate the enigmatic Long-whiskered Owlet – an absolute mega night-bird of South America! Peru is simply mind-blowing, and our tour sampled varied delights ranging from the cold Pacific Ocean to high Andean passes, and awesome tropical Amazonian rainforest in between. Aside from the owlet, which was only recently rediscovered, we managed excellent sightings of Marvelous Spatuletail, Ochre-fronted Antpitta, Cinnamon Screech Owl, Yellow-faced and Amazonian Parrotlet, Grey-bellied Comet, Yellow-scarfed Tanager, Buff-bridled Inca Finch, Ash-throated Antwren, White-winged Guan, Inca Tern, Pavonine Cuckoo, Rufous-fronted Anthrush, Pale-winged Trumpeter, Bartlett’s Tinamou and Musician Wren. From a mammal viewpoint, the group also managed to find Brazilian Tapir, Peruvian Night Monkey, Red Howler Monkey and Giant Otter.
