Although the Dominican Republic is perhaps best known for its luxurious beaches, outstanding food and vibrant culture, a birding tour of the island has much to offer both the avid birder and more general naturalist alike. Due to the amazing biodiversity of the island, Hispaniola ranks highest in the world as a priority for bird protection! This 9 day birdwatching tour provides the perfect opportunity to encounter nearly all of the island’s 33 endemic bird species, plus other Greater Antillean specialties. We accomplish this by thoroughly exploring the island’s variety of habitats, from the evergreen and pine forests of the Sierra de Bahoruco to the dry forests of the coast. Furthermore, the accommodations throughout are fairly comfortable, ranging from basic, remote cabins deep in the forest, to well-appointed hotels near the beach, each with its own unique local flair. Join us for this delightful tour to the most diverse island in the Caribbean!

DIFFICULT: This is a high-intensity “mega” tour designed for passionate listers and serious birders who enjoy a fast-paced schedule. Due to its demanding nature, it’s not recommended for avid photographers, inexperienced birders, or anyone with mobility or health limitations.
Can be a tiring tour but is suitable for most birding interest levels.
Mostly comfortable, hot water availability can be variable at some lodges. Some lodges may experience maintenance issues.
Moderate. Several skulking species, mostly searched for from the road edge or short trails. Some nocturnal endemics may require several attempts requiring early morning/late evening owling.
great scenery & beaches, friendly people, good food
Reasonable, quite a few skulking species. No dedicated hides or feeders.
"May I say Lev and his team of guides and drivers where excellent in every way, nothing was too much trouble. Their knowledge of the birds and their patience and good humour made this trip memorable. And to top it all I saw all the endemics. Thanks Pete"
"The birds cooperated, but Forrest and everyone on the tour worked hard and remarkably all participants on the tour were able to record every endemic species, mostly seen very well. The large bus provided plenty of room and the Wifi on the bus was another surprise!"
Our Rockjumper guide for all three tours, Adam Walleyn, was an excellent birder and attentive to all participants. We have travelled with Adam previously and continue to enjoy his expertise and passion for nature. Adam's leadership was a major factor in our booking the three tours.
Bobby Wilcox was excellent: attentive to all the guests, helping with camera issues, ensuring everyone saw the birds, and enhancing the group experience. The photos he just shared with us are fantastic! Our local DR guide was very knowledgeable about not only birds, but many other topics including history, politics, geology, Haiti, etc.
Lev Frid was outstanding. He is knowledgeable, capable, hard working, friendly, easy going and a super human being. I had a blast with him and can’t find enough positive adjectives to describe him.
