South America has so many mind-blowing destinations to offer the global birder, here we have highlighted some of our favourites. Each of the tours below offers something different, from Brazil’s excellent combination of both birds and wildlife to the spectacular Chilean scenery, food and wine!
It’s no surprise that Brazil’s absurd level of endemicity and avian biodiversity places it right up there on any global birders’ travel wish list, with close to 1,900 bird species. From the depths of the Amazon rainforest to the sprawling Pantanal wetlands and the lush Atlantic Forest, almost 60% of all the bird species of South America can be found. This mind-blowing percentage comprises 103 families and 243 country endemic species in Brazil alone!
Brazil is almost an endless treasure trove of regions to explore, each offering their own unique species and highlights. The mammals are also not to be ignored and for those who have never been to the Pantanal, for example, this is a wildlife extravaganza. The birding is fabulous with so many species that seem to want to be seen, while this is THE best place on Earth to see the mighty Jaguar, Giant Otter, Ocelot, Lowland Tapir, Marsh Deer, Southern Tamandua, and even the elusive Giant Anteater!
Strategically situated between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes, Chile’s geography – a 4,250 km long narrow ribbon of land – is as diverse as it gets. From the arid Atacama Desert in the north to the windswept cliffs of Cape Horn in the far south, Chile’s diversity extends to its vibrant birdlife and wildlife. The birding prospects are exceptionally rich, from soaring Andean Condors to the dainty Chilean Woodstar, the highlights here span the gamut of the avian world. Endemic species like Chilean tapaculos, known as huet-huets and turcas, the Rufous-legged Owl, White-throated Treerunner, Grey-breasted Seedsnipe, and the aptly named Giant Hummingbird, are sure to provide constant entertainment!
Join us on a search for the numerous specialities and endemics to be found through this staggeringly scenic country. The birding highlights are numerous and include excellent chances for the monotypic Magellanic Plover while others such as the striking Diademed Sandpiper-Plover, James’s Flamingo, Puna Ibis, Chilean Tinamou, Grey-breasted Seedsnipe, Andean Avocet, Rufous-legged Owl, Slender-billed Parakeet, Magellanic Woodpecker, White-throated Treerunner and many more will also be enjoyed.
Accommodations, meals, and wines are excellent throughout the tour and the Chilean people offer warm hospitality. Combined with the outstanding scenery of high-altitude Puna lakes and snow-capped volcanoes, excellent coastal desert and rich Patagonian Forest, this is without doubt one of South America’s most memorable birding destinations!
Boasting an unrivalled bird species count, Colombia is an undisputed avian paradise, with more than 1900 species inhabiting its diverse ecosystems. At least 89 of these species are endemics, making this nation a must-visit destination for any global birder. This extreme biodiversity comes from Colombia’s range of habitats, which include three Andean Cordilleras (Western, Central, and Eastern Andes), two inter-Andean valleys (the Cauca and Magdalena Valleys), the lowland forests of the Amazon and Orinoco regions, the isolated, snow-capped Santa Marta Mountains, Pacific and Caribbean coasts, deserts and lakes, and the rich wet forests of the Chocó.
Our Mega tour spends a month traversing all three Andean Chains and exploring the depths of the Magdalena and Cauca Valleys. This tour is hands down the single most comprehensive offer to experience the most biodiverse nation in the world!
Our comprehensive highlights of Colombia tour also covers all three Andean ranges and both inter-Andean valleys, as well as lowland rainforest in search of numerous endemics and regional avian specialties. We will be searching for a remarkable collection of birds that are likely to exceed 400 species, including over 60 species of colourful tanagers, 8 species of furtive antpittas, and nearly 50 species of dazzling hummingbirds!
Our Colombia – Perijá & Santa Marta Endemics tour takes us to the Santa Marta Mountains and the Guajira Peninsula on the northern coast of Colombia, as well as the recently explored Perija range on the Venezuelan border. It is one of the most endemic-rich regions of South America, hosting nearly 50 endemics and regional specialities plus numerous endemic subspecies (several of which, upon further taxonomic review, are likely to be elevated to full species status in the future).
